Chapel with Small Children

Weekly Lessons with Preschoolers

October Week 1

Handout front What is a Saint

Handout back Scripture: Philemon 1:4-6  I always thank my God as I remember you in my prayers, because I hear about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints. I pray that you may be active in sharing your faith, so that you will have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ.

Song: “Oh when the Saints”

Oh, when the saints go marching in,
Oh, when the saints go marching in
Lord how I want to be in that number
Oh, when the saints go marching in,

And when the sun begins to shine
And when the sun begins to shine
Lord, how I want to be in that number
When the sun begins to shine

Prayer:
Jesus, my friend, Jesus it’s true.
Day and night, I love you. Amen

Materials needed: minimal costumes.
2 robes from the Christmas play
an apron
a first aid kit
Lesson:
Read scripture: The man who wrote those words was named Paul. He writes them to Christians who are his friends. He writes them because he is glad to know about what they are doing. They are trying to live the way Jesus wants us to live. That is why he calls them saints.

I have a story for you that Jesus told. Some of you might remember it. It is the story of the Good Samaritan. I need your help to tell the story. I need two people to be important people (have two children come up. Explain that one is a priest, that is a minister kind of like a pastor, another was a Levi who also was a minister. Put robes on over the children’s cloths.) And, I need a person to be the Samaritan. (Give the first aid kit to the child). In the days of Jesus, the people of Jesus’ community did not like Samaritans because they came from a different family. Next, I need an inn keeper ( wait as a child comes up. Put the apron on the child. ) Finally, I need someone to be the person who was hurt. ( once the child comes up ask the child to lay on the chancel stairs and look like they are badly hurt. Place the innkeeper at one end of the chancel and the other three at the opposite end with the hurt person in the middle.) Now for our story, Once there was a person who was badly hurt on a dangerous road. Along came a priest ( guide the child to pass by the hurt person). What do you think the priest did? (wait)Do you think he helped the person who was hurt? (wait) No, he did not help. He was afraid that he would get dirty. ( Help child walk by. Go back for next child.) Then along came a Levite. What do you think he did? (wait) He did not help either. He was afraid he would get dirty. ( Help the child go by and then go for the third child.) Then came along a Samaritan. Children, think about a person you do not like. Imagine that is this person because that is what it was like when Jesus told the story. And guess what the Samaritan did when he saw the person who was hurt? (wait) The Samaritan helped the person. (Show the children the first aid kit. Many of them will recognize the red cross on it. ) The Samaritan didn’t really have a fancy first aid kit like ours. He did have medicine that he kept with him for his journey and he used it to help the hurt person. Then the Samaritan took the hurt person to a place called an inn that is a place people can stay when they are far from home. (Help the children help each other to go to the “inn”) And you know what the Samaritan did when they came to the inn? The Samaritan paid the innkeeper to help the person who was hurt. (whisper to the “Samaritan” to tell the innkeeper) “Take care of this person.” (whisper “ Good job” when the child does. ) Jesus said this is what we are to do. We are to treat other people the way we want to be treated. That is what a saint is. In our Protestant church tradition, a saint is someone who loves God and cares for other people.
Thank you children ( take back their costumes and send them back to their teachers). Let’s sing our song!
