Chapel with Small Children

Weekly Lessons with Preschoolers

November Week 4
If Chapel is a week day event, it is likely that there is no chapel this week because of Thanksgiving. However, if this program is used for Sunday preschool, here is a program.

Thankful the Lost Sheep is Found

picture from http://www.coloring.ws/

Materials needed:

A shepherd’s robe from the Christmas play supplies
One set of sheep ears ( take a plastic girls hair band and attach white cloth or paper ears)
Lots of small sheep cut outs (can us a cookie cutter to draw the shapes, cut them out and hide them in the chapel )
Learn Luke 15:1-7 well enough so you can tell the story without looking at the text.
Lesson:
Read scripture passage that you have been doing for the month
We have been reading this passage from our Bible that was part of an old, old song. Do you remember why the person who was singing it was happy? The song tells about how God is with us even when things seem very difficult.

Jesus tells a story about how much God cares for all people. I will need your help to tell the story. I need someone to be a shepherd ( When child comes up, put the robe over the child’s cloths) then we will need a sheep. ( When the child comes up, put the ears on the child’s head.) Now, I also need all of you to be sheep as well. Let me hear what sheep say ( have all the children say baa, baa) Very good. Everyone ready for the story? (wait for them to quiet and have their eyes on you). Jesus told the story of how there was once a shepherd (have the shepherd child stand in front of everyone) who had many sheep ( point to all the children and have them “baa”). One day one of the sheep wondered off ( help the child with the sheep ears go further away from the group). The shepherd was counting the sheep (have the “shepherd “ go out and pretend to count all the other children. ) And the shepherd could not find one of the sheep. The shepherd knew that the lost sheep would be in trouble, so the shepherd searched and searched. When the lost sheep was found the shepherd brought the sheep home ( have “shepherd” and “lost sheep” come back to the place where all the other “sheep” are sitting). Then the shepherd invited all the neighbors over to celebrate. For the shepherd was very thankful that the lost sheep was found and was now safe. Have any of you children ever felt lost? ( Let them tell their stories) What did it feel like when you were found.( Scary if it was a stranger who found them. Happy if it was a grown up they trusted who found them.) Imagine the shepherd has a party because the shepherd is so happy to find the lost sheep. I wonder if the sheep wants to have a party, too. I wonder if the sheep that was lost was also very happy to be found.

Since we are a small group today, I have hidden little sheep that look like this ( hold up one of the cut outs and tell the children what the boundaries are that they can search) . You can search for these lost sheep. All the ones you find you get to keep. When I begin our song, you must be back in your seats. Ready? Lets go look for some sheep.
( after a few minutes) Now, it is time for our thankful song.
